Rules in brief
- Deal. Everyone gets 5 cards (3, then 2) and one card is turned face up. After the bidding the buyer takes the face‑up card and 2 more, the others take 3 — eight cards each. Play goes counter‑clockwise.
- Bidding. In the first round you may pass, call Hokm (the face‑up card’s suit becomes trumps), Sun (no trumps) or Ashkal (like Sun, but your partner takes the face‑up card). If all pass, the second round allows Hokm in a different suit, or Sun.
- Card order. In Sun and in plain suits: A, 10, K, Q, J, 9, 8, 7. In the trump suit: J, 9, A, 10, K, Q, 8, 7 — the Jack (20) and the Nine (14) are the strongest trumps.
- Play. You must follow suit. In Hokm, if you cannot follow you usually have to trump, and over‑trump when you can; the rule is eased when your partner is already winning the trick. The last trick earns 10 extra points.
- Projects. Sira (three cards in sequence), Fifty (four), Hundred (five in sequence, or four Kings, Queens, Jacks or Tens) and Four Hundred (four Aces in Sun). Baloot — the King and Queen of trumps in one hand — is worth 2.
- Scoring. Card points become 16 per hand in Hokm and 26 in Sun. If the buying team takes less than half, the opponents get everything. Taking all eight tricks (Kaboot) scores 25 in Hokm or 44 in Sun. A hand can be raised with Double, Triple, Four and Gahwa.

Frequently asked questions
Is Baloot the same as Belote?
They are related: Baloot belongs to the Belote family, but the Saudi game has its own bidding (Sun, Hokm and Ashkal), its own projects and a game to 152 points.
How many points do you need to win Baloot?
152. When a team reaches 152 the team with more points wins; if the scores are equal, another hand is played.
What is the difference between Sun and Hokm?
Sun is played without trumps and is worth 26 points per hand; in Hokm one suit is trumps and the hand is worth 16. Sun outranks Hokm in the bidding.
